The Month Experience Proved Its Worth
Aug 25, 2026 Bi-Monthly Edition
Three templates the industry inherited took a public hit this month.
Sponsorship decks built on Gold, Silver and Bronze are losing buyers who now ask what the money achieves.
Attendees are being intercepted by fake registration and housing sites that a scammer can build in under three minutes. And experienced planners, the ones who never say no, are quietly writing exit posts. Underneath all of it sits one question we are bringing into every program conversation this autumn:
what exactly is the event accountable for, and can we prove it?
Here is what earned our attention.

01 Industry News
What is moving the market
Sponsorship tiers are dying, and outcome-based packages are taking their place
SKIFT MEETINGS · 12 AUGUST 2026
Peter Bordes, VP of events and experiences at payment tech company Circle, argues that the Gold, Silver and Bronze hierarchy was built around logo placement and booth size rather than around what a partner wants to achieve. Money 20/20 now sells four outcome categories instead of spend tiers: Accelerate Deals, Build Partnerships, Raise Profile and Media Impact. EDUCAUSE replaced badge-for-dollars with year-round engagement paired with in-person thought leadership. Bordes also points to festival-style formats that fold side events into the official program instead of fighting them.
Fake conferences are multiplying, and AI is doing the building
SKIFT MEETINGS · 11 AUGUST 2026
Faisal Shah, co-founder of brand-protection firm Tracer, asked an AI tool to produce a fake conference site and had a convincing landing page in 2 minutes and 45 seconds. The Radiological Society of North America was alerted to at least 36 fraudulent sites selling unauthorized housing, registration and attendee lists around one annual meeting of 50,000 people. FTC data released in June show consumers reported losing $3.5 billion to imposter scams in 2025, nearly three times the 2020 figure, with business impersonation alone near $1 billion.
When a hotel walks away, most planners still cannot price the damage
SKIFT MEETINGS · 10 AUGUST 2026
Contract language routinely protects an organization's right to be made whole after a cancellation or relocation, but it rarely produces the number that defines what "whole" actually means. Planners are left assembling rebooking costs, rate differentials, marketing rework and attendee attrition after the fact, usually under time pressure. The gap sits between legal protection and financial proof.

02 Incentive Travel & Destination Watch
Where reward travel is heading
Greater Palm Springs seats emerging planners next to veterans, incentive and luxury included
SKIFT MEETINGS · 12 AUGUST 2026
Visit Greater Palm Springs launched a 24-member customer advisory board built with PCMA, pairing established and emerging planners across three segments: technology, associations and nonprofits, and incentive and luxury. The program runs from this month through 2028 and was capped at 24 to keep the discussion candid. Chief sales and marketing officer Colleen Pace says feedback should shape destination experiences, site-inspection tools and planner support, and that input must be meaningful rather than ceremonial.
Key West trades hands: Pier House Resort sells for $190 million
COSTAR NEWS · 14 AUGUST 2026
Braemar Hotels & Resorts sold the 142-key Pier House Resort & Spa to Sixth Street, in partnership with Riller Capital, for $190 million. The property sits on five acres on Duval Street with two oceanfront dining venues, a spa, 75 linear feet of private beach and roughly 3,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The sale is part of Braemar's disposition program as it separates from external adviser Ashford Inc.

03 Brand Experience & Event Innovation
Ideas worth stealing
Visit Baltimore built a record shop on wheels and drove it up the East Coast
BIZBASH · 10 AUGUST 2026
Smalltimore 2.0: B-Side Records is a 24-foot mobile visitor center designed as a walk-in record shop, with crates of 30 custom album covers sorted into Staff Picks, Deep Cuts, Breakout Hits and Iconic. A listening station played a track written by seven Baltimore musicians, and a partnership with MICA's Globe Collection let visitors print a custom poster from a "What's Your Travel Vibe?" quiz. Stops were chosen by audience fit rather than footfall, including Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, Juneteenth Jubilee in Philadelphia, Levitate in Boston and Great South Bay on Long Island.
Lollapalooza 2026: what the strongest brand activations actually did
BIZBASH · 11 AUGUST 2026
BizBash's roundup of the festival's best builds shows Neutrogena, Snapchat, Red Bull and others trading photo walls for utility and repeat visits. The pattern across the standouts is a reason to come back: refill, recharge, cool down, collect. Attendance was rewarded rather than merely captured.
Six new Northern California venues open up for meetings and events
BIZBASH · 12 AUGUST 2026
BizBash catalogued six newly available spaces across San Francisco and Northern California for summer and autumn programs, spanning restaurants, hotels and cultural venues with private buyout capacity. The list arrives as the Bay Area's AI boom tightens hotel and meeting availability in the city core.

04 People, Jobs & Industry Moves
Who is moving where
Planners are leaving jobs they love, and the numbers explain why
SKIFT MEETINGS · 13 AUGUST 2026
A candid retirement post from event strategist Lisa Callaghan, a veteran of One10, Maritz and CWT Meetings and Events, set off a wide industry conversation about passion being used as a compensation model. The supporting data is blunt: more than a third of planners report anxiety or burnout (PCMA), fewer than half say wellbeing is built into their workplace culture (Meetings Industry Association), 60% work 50-plus hour weeks in peak season and 75% report irregular sleep. Ignite's Debbie van der Beek has launched the WorthIt campaign and Canada's first business events salary survey, while Janice Cardinale's Event Minds Matter reports planners leaving corporate roles for solo practice.

06 EDITOR'S PICK
Sponsors stopped buying tiers. The new currency is outcomes.
Of everything this month,
the sponsorship story reaches furthest into a P&L.
Money 20/20 now sells four outcome categories instead of price tiers, EDUCAUSE swapped the badge-for-dollars model for year-round engagement, and Circle's Peter Bordes puts the question plainly: is the tier chart serving the sponsor, or saving the business development team time?
This is a revenue redesign, not a deck refresh. We ask each partner what they need to achieve, build the activation around that answer, and report against it afterwards.
The work is heavier at the front end. The renewal conversation gets shorter, and the number gets bigger.

07 Strategic Takeaways for Clients
Where to put your attention this month
Rebuild one sponsorship package around an outcome
Take your largest partner, ask what they need the event to achieve, and rebuild that tier as a single named result we report against.
Publish the official channels loudly
Name the only legitimate registration, housing and vendor links in every attendee email, and add domain, ad and social monitoring to the event security scope.
Price the cancellation clause before it is needed
Build the damages model now: rate deltas, air change fees, marketing rework, staff hours, projected attrition. A number we can defend is leverage.
Staff the peak, not the average
Find the back-to-back stretch in the calendar that nobody has questioned and add resource to it. The most committed people are the ones the market is courting.
Design experiences that travel
One tightly built environment moving through five markets buys more depth per dollar than five booths, and lets us choose stops by audience fit rather than footfall.
Re-verify held properties
Ownership and leadership changed hands in several group markets this month. We confirm assignment language and meet the new decision-maker inside 30 days.
The Room is Yours.
The Audience is Yours.
This season, so is the proof.
